Former President Trump has been charged with mishandling classified information on 37 counts.

At his hearing on Tuesday, former President Donald Trump pleaded not guilty to 37 charges of mishandling confidential information.

The allegations arise from a probe into whether Trump transported confidential materials from the White House to his Mar-a-Lago club after leaving office.

Trump was not taken into custody, fingerprinted, or required to pay bail.

He was freed on his own recognisance and has no travel restrictions.

He is not permitted to discuss the matter with his co-defendant, Walt Nauta, though.

Jack Smith was assigned by the Justice Department to examine whether Trump misused sensitive material.

Each of the counts against Trump carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in jail.
